Everyone needs a place to call home, but for the approximately 6.5 million people in the United States with an intellectual disability, finding a safe place to live and thrive through adulthood can be a challenge.
For the last 20 years, Michael Thompson, a financial professional with MassMutual Greater Richmond, has served on the board of directors of Good Neighbor Village, a Virginia-based nonprofit residential community for adults with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities.
In 1987, Thompson’s mother helped found Good Neighbor Village to support his sister Cathy and others in their community with special needs. Since then, Good Neighbor Village has grown into a nurturing and supportive community that strives to meet both the physical and intellectual needs of its residents through housing and programming.
For the past 15 years, Thompson has served as the organization’s president and chairman of the board. He has led fundraising initiatives, recruited new board members, and supported families as they joined the Good Neighbor Village community.
Thompson’s continued service earned the organization a $25,000 donation from the MassMutual Foundation as part of the 2023 Community Service Awards (CSA) program.
“A group of very special people live here,” said John Rutledge, a Good Neighbor Village board member. “The Village provides them the opportunity to be part of a community, live independently, and, most importantly, live life to its fullest.”
The $25,000 donation from the MassMutual Foundation will go directly to enhancing the lives of residents through programming, activities, and other services they need to live their most fulfilling lives.
Each year, the MassMutual Foundation awards grants — ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 — to help nonprofit organizations with which MassMutual financial professionals are involved. You can read more about the program here.
