Faivel Folger, a financial professional working in the Brooklyn borough of New York City, takes protecting the ones he loves quite literally. In addition to his financial services career, for the last 25 years, Folger has served as a volunteer certified emergency medical technician (EMT) for Hatzolah of Boro Park.
“Being part of the life-saving work that Hatzolah of Boro Park provides to the community free of charge has always been a dream of mine,” said Folger. “As a kid, if you asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, it would have certainly been a member of Hatzolah of Boro Park.”
As a certified EMT, Folger is available around-the-clock to respond to emergency medical calls in his community. He’s responded to more than 200 calls in Brooklyn, helping to save lives and support families coping with illness and tragedy. Folger also volunteers as a dispatcher, fielding hundreds of emergency calls each shift, offering a voice of calm reassurance and guidance until emergency medical personal arrive on scene.
“Faivel possesses a cooperative attitude and readiness to make a sacrifice,” said Esther Rosenberg, director of Hatzolah of Boro Park. “He is an invaluable asset to our organization; his compassion and cultural competence are unparalleled.”
Folger’s service to Hatzolah of Boro Park earned the organization a $10,000 donation from the MassMutual Foundation as part of its Community Service Awards (CSA) program. Hatzolah of Boro Park will use the funds to purchase life-saving medical supplies and equipment as they expand along with the exponential growth of their community.

The heartbeat of the community
Driven by a sense of community as much as by a mission to save lives, Hatzolah of Boro Park volunteers are reared on a spirit of compassionate care. Founded in 1988, Hatzolah of Boro Park provides rapid, reliable emergency medical services (EMS) to the community, at no cost, including ambulatory services and health and medical education programs.
Hatzolah of Boro Park is one of several Jewish volunteer EMS organizations worldwide dedicated serving their communities, giving free medical service no matter the religious affiliation of the recipient. "Hatzolah" is the Hebrew word for rescue.
Each year, the MassMutual Foundation awards grants — ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 — to help nonprofit organizations with which MassMutual financial professionals are involved. You can read more about the program here.
