When Jessica Holloway, partner and chief operating officer of The Jamrog Group, first met Alison Berman as a new client, she didn’t know how life-changing the interaction would be.
That’s because Berman is the founding director of Girls on the Run Western Massachusetts — a physical activity–based youth development program. And in learning about her new client’s work with the enterprise, Holloway reflected on her own childhood and the positive impact her running coach had on her development.
“I was once that girl — and the confidence I developed by just one coach believing in me became a defining part of my story,” Holloway related. “Helping create those life-changing moments for the next generation is the most fulfilling way I can imagine to pay it forward.”
Despite its name, Girls on the Run isn’t only about running. Trained volunteer coaches lead dynamic, research-based programs that combine physical activity with critical life skill development. Through fun, interactive lessons, participants build confidence, set goals, and learn to manage emotions while forming healthy friendships. It all helps them to thrive in school and become prepared for what’s beyond.
So, what began as a conversation with a client became the spark igniting Holloway’s passion to help young girls discover their strength, confidence, and voice.
In 2019, she launched the first Girls on the Run team at Robinson Park Elementary School in Agawam, Massachusetts. Holloway coached for three seasons, delivering the program’s 20-lesson curriculum that helps girls navigate life experiences with strength and empathy. As the program grew, she recruited volunteers, worked with school administrators, and advocated for expanded access so more young girls could benefit.
In 2021, Holloway joined the board of directors as secretary and now serves as board chair. Under her leadership, the organization has strengthened its financial position, launched funds for alumni scholarships, and recruited new board members to support long-term sustainability.
In recognition of Holloway’s work with the organization, Girls on the Run Western Massachusetts will receive a $25,000 donation from the MassMutual Foundation as part of its 2025 Community Service Awards program. The donation will be used to help fund scholarships, transportation solutions, and volunteer training — ensuring that every girl who wants to can join the program.
Holloway’s volunteerism has created meaningful connections with clients and colleagues. Her firm, The Jamrog Group, led a sneaker drive that collected more than 250 pairs of shoes for girls in need. She’s recruited board members through professional relationships and regularly cheers on clients’ children at the program’s semiannual 5K events.
Each year, the MassMutual Foundation awards donations — ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 — to help nonprofit organizations with which MassMutual financial professionals are involved.
